Planning
I chose to reflect on one of the planning exercises I did for a piece of writing that I included in my multigenre project. We had to include an informational piece and I decided to brainstorm ideas that I might be able to use. I chose this particular artifact because it shows my thinking. I wrote down different ideas, different people I wanted to talk to, and different ways I could set up the piece. When I am planning, I write down all of my thoughts because I don’t know which ideas will make it to the end and become published. There were times I thought an idea was going to work and then it didn’t. When that happened, I had my planning sheet to refer back to.
When helping my students plan for their writing, I will have them write down everything they can think of about a topic that is interesting to them. As well as, their ideas on what they think could make a good piece of writing. This will allow them to stay organized in their thinking. Also, they will have a permanent reference to look back at if they are having a difficult time coming up with a writing idea. Planning this way also allows for student choice which is an integral part in writing.
